England was handed a shock defeat as they opened their bid to win the ICC 20/20 World Cup Tournament yesterday. They lost by four wickets to the Netherlands.
The Netherlands are an ICC affiliate team and were certainly the underdogs going into the match.
Tom de Grooth, a cricket coach in Holland who has played club cricket in South Africa, Australia and England, bolstered the middle-order with 49 from 30 balls and was awarded the Man of the Match.
The Netherlands clinched their victory in the final over. With two runs required from the last ball, Edgar Schiferli held his nerve and raced for the single off the bowling of Stuart Broad then turned for the winning run as Broad missed with a throw at the stumps at the bowler’s end.
Final score England 162/5 (20 overs); Netherlands 163/6 (20 overs)
