Ireland - The Giant Killlers

Ireland was the team to put the cat amongst the pigeons in the ODI World Cup and they may be about to do the same thing again in the 20/20.

Ireland put up a spirited performance today to put Bangladesh out of the 20/20.

Australia knocked out of 20/20 Cricket World Cup

Didn't get to see today's matches but was surprised to learn that Australia lost their match to Sri Lanka. I was hoping they would have done like England and pulled one back to keep the status in the group interesting. However it was always going to be a do or die situation for Group D as they are the only group without an ICC Associate member team.

England Stays in the Game

England managed to pull off a win against Pakistan, in their second match of the ICC 20/20 Cricket World Cup.

Having lost the opening match to the Netherlands on Friday, England needed to win this match to stay in contention for the tournament.

England batted first and managed to score 185/5 with a gutsy performance. Pieterson showed his form with 58 runs off 38 balls. But Pakistan are ranked amongst the favorites to win this tournament and England must have been wondering if they had enough runs on the board as they came out to defend the total.

They need not have worried. Pakistan appeared a shadow of their former selves as the English bowling systematically took them apart. Even the great Alfridi could not help the side as he was caught at long on by Morgan for 5 off the bowling of Swann.

Pakistan could not keep up with the run rate and handed England a four wicket victory with 137/7 in their twenty overs, 38 runs short of the total.

Scotland the Brave

Scotland continued to put up a brave performance today as they faced South Africa in their second match of the ICC 20/20 World Cup tournament at Lords.

Scotland won the toss and chose to bowl first. They started off well enough but by the middle of the innings the South Africans were showing their dominance. Scotland may have taken some heart when the South Africans lost both Hamilton and Smith in the third over but then A.B. de Villiers came to the crease and was relentless in teaching the Associates about cricket at this level. He made an entertaining 79 runs off 34 balls and carried the South Africans to an unassailable 211 runs.

Scotland's high point of the match came when Coezter took an amazing catch at long-on to take the wicket of Boucher. He was practically on the boundary and leaped high in the air with his right hand outstretched. The ball stuck and he was given a rousing ovation for what will surely be one of the outstanding cathces of the tournament.

Scotland tried their best but were no match for the bowling of the likes of Dale Steyn and Johan Botha. They were all out for 81 in the 16th over.

It now remains to be seen if South Africa or New Zealand will top this group D. They are due to face each other in a match on Tuesday.

Rain affects play on day 2 of 20/20 Cricket World Cup

Bad weather halted the start of play at the Kennington Oval London today but it did nothing to dampen the spirits of the persons who braved the weather to watch two very closely contested matches.

The rain meant that the first match between New Zealand and Scotland was reduced to a 7 overs a side match. Scotland, one of the ICC affiliate teams, batted first amassing an impressive 89/4 in their 7 overs. Any hopes of following in the footsteps of their fellow affiliates, the Netherlands, were quickly put to rest as New Zealand amassed 90/3 in six overs. New Zealand won by 7 wickets (with 6 balls remaining).

Gayle Blows over Kennington Oval on Day 2 of 20/20 World Cup

In the second match of the day Australia played the West Indies., in a match they were surely expected to win given the current form of the West Indies team. Having won the toss Ricky Ponting chose to have his side, Australia, bat first. They amassed a total of 169/7 in their 20 overs.

Although a gettable score the West Indies form of late must have left their fans wondering how they were going to manage to throw this one away. But that was not to be the way for this game. Chris Gayle's four off the first ball, showed that he meant business and with Andre Fletcher at the other end they put on a total of for the first wicket. When Fletcher was out for 53 he had faced 32 balls and hit six 4's and one 6.

Gayle had his own impressive innings, hitting Lee for 22 runs in the fifth over with three 6's and one 4. he hit six 4's and six 6's in his innings of 88. By the time he was out West Indies were 157 needing 13 runs to win.

The winning runs were eventually made by Ramnaresh Sarwan with a four off Johnson in the 16th over. West Indies won by 7 wickets (with 25 balls remaining). The final score: Australia 169/7 (in 20 0vers); West Indies 172/3 (in 15.5 overs)

ICC 20/20 World Cup 2009

The 2nd Bi-annual 20/20 tournament hosted by the ICC bowled off in England on June 5th. The opening match was played at Lords between the hosts, England and the Netherlands, one of the affiliate ICC teams competing in the tournament.

The first 20/20 World cup was played in 2007 and hosted by South Africa. It was won by India who beat Pakistan in the final at the Wanderers and are odds on favorites to retain the trophy.

England Ousted by Netherlands

England was handed a shock defeat as they opened their bid to win the ICC 20/20 World Cup Tournament yesterday. They lost by four wickets to the Netherlands.

The Netherlands are an ICC affiliate team and were certainly the underdogs going into the match.

Tom de Grooth, a cricket coach in Holland who has played club cricket in South Africa, Australia and England, bolstered the middle-order with 49 from 30 balls and was awarded the Man of the Match.

The Netherlands clinched their victory in the final over. With two runs required from the last ball, Edgar Schiferli held his nerve and raced for the single off the bowling of Stuart Broad then turned for the winning run as Broad missed with a throw at the stumps at the bowler’s end.

Final score England 162/5 (20 overs); Netherlands 163/6 (20 overs)
